What is an Assistance Dog?

An Assistance Dog increases the independence of a person with a disability by doing work or performing tasks for the benefit of that person. A dog may retrieve dropped items, open and close doors, or pull a wheelchair. Along with physical assistance, a service dog provides companionship that may have psychological and social benefits.

A Signal Dog alerts a person with a hearing impairment to the presence of specific sounds, such as smoke/clock alarms, telephone, another person, knocks at the door, and other unusual sounds.

A Seizure Response Dog is trained to provide assistance to an individual with seizures. The dog may pull a lifeline switch, summon help for the person or just lay quietly with the person during the seizure and then assist him/her to stand up afterwards.

An Psychiatric Assistance Dog provides a degree of stability and
consistency for a person and allows him/her to function in public.
